The corporate press is so anti-labor these days that it is hard to get a true picture. The theater owners and producers are said by Union to be demanding a 38% cut in jobs and wages. They have a two million dollar fund, from the sale of tickets, to insulate themselves. As a Union flyer I am holding in my hand says, "cuts in jobs and wages will never result in a cut in ticket prices to benefit the public, but only an increase in the profits for producers."
Broadway is a billion dollar a year industry. Look at the NY Times list of the weekly take from Broadway shows. It is staggering. More and more of the theaters and productions are in the hands of large corporations, Disney first among them. Once more, when big corporations get involved, the cost to consumers goes up and the wages go down so that the corporations can make more profits. They can't "outsource" the stagehands and actors and still be on Broadway, so they cut back on stage hands and risk everyone's safety.
Stage hands keep everyone safe, especially during the critical periods of moving equipment into the theater, a time the producers and owners want to reduce work force.
The corporate media are only showing the producers' side of this because they are hand in glove with the corporate owners and producers.
