Chávez's 21st Century Socialism is Hopeless

by Marifeli Perez-Stable, Miami Herald, USA - Proposed reforms are: indefinite presidential reelection, elimination of the Central Bank's autonomy, and creation of a ''patriotic and anti-imperialist'' military.

Most press coverage of Chavez is, like this article, very negative. Other countries are free to pursue governments very different from ours that will meet their needs. The current government of Venezuela was freely elected, unlike that of the United States since the 2000 election. That government is using its resources for the good of its people, not for the good of corporations, unlike the regime in power in the US.

Many in the world are watching with interest the experiments of countries that are rejecting American style representative democracy for other forms of democracy. I for one do not find that the US government is even truly a democracy any more and certainly it is not working for the good of the US population but for the profit of the corporations that have bought it.
