The courage of Haleh Esfandiari in the face of imprisonment is inspiring. I rejoice that she was not tortured, which was always a fear at the back of my mind. I rejoice that she is now free.
I also reflect on the inhumanity of the US to persons it puts in prison these days. I know that my country is responsible for not only imprisoning people without charge but also of torturing them. It is grievous.
I salute Haleh for choosing to be a dignified and respectful human being in this horrible time in her life. I long for the end of this kind of treatment of people by any government.
