A Dutch Retreat on Speech?

by Anne Applebaum, Washington Post, USA - Are critics of radical Islam entitled to the same free speech rights enjoyed by other citizens of European countries and the United States?

Thank you to the editors for linking this article. What I wonder about as well are free speech protections for women and men who advocate all kinds of positions. What about those who advocate very traditional Islamic values? The current lead article about a public school that teaches Arabic in New York is under attack. It is a secular school, but some people here still do not think it should exist. What about some person who advocates very traditional Islam? Do we protect them and their rights to speak out?

I loathe the bigoted, hateful "shock jock" sort of radio programs and the patent falsehoods and toadyism of Fox news and others who are really propagandists for the Bush regime. My response is not to listen to them, not to knowingly patronize those who support them; but I don't want to see those people repressed. I long to see real freedom of speech in the US and the world.
