Convicted Abu Ghraib Guard Lynndie England Blames Media for Controversy

by Kim Zetter, Wired, USA - Lynndie England, the former Abu Ghraib guard whose face became a symbol in 2004 for everything that went wrong with the Iraq War, has blamed the media for the prisoner abuse scandal that brought shame to the military in a new interview with the German news magazine Stern (the interview is in English).

The interview that Kim did with Philip Zimbardo (and which is linked to in her article) is an important one for everyone to read. When I learned about the Stanford Prison Experiment in college, I realized that given the right circumstances, ordinary people can be driven to do extraordinarily terrible things. And in Lynndie's case, you can really see just how much the situation blinded her to the fact that what she and her colleagues were doing amounted to torture (be sure to read her full interview, also linked to Kim's article). I think it speaks to the corrupting forces of power and the consequent need for reality checks and monitoring, whether it be in a civilian prison or Abu Ghraib.
