Struggling to Dance
by Beena Sarwar, The International News, Pakistan - When the Ghanshyams were hounded out of the country during the Zia regime in 1983, [Sheema] was away in India doing a second year-long dance apprenticeship. Vigilantes began attacking the rented residence which doubled as their dance institute, smashing windows and spray painting graffiti on the gate threatening 'Islamic punishment' to anyone coming there to sing and dance.

What an inspiration to dancers all over the world. May Sheema continue to dance and to teach others their dance culture. May she do so in peace and security. Dancers, unlike most other artists who use sonorous instruments or objects of some sort, use our bodies to make the art we offer to the world, bringing to people a glimpse of the heavenly hosts as John Fraser remarked in his book about ABT and Baryshnikov.
In some respects, as a dancer in the US, I experience similar problems, though I have never had to flee for my life. I do know how hard it is to find the funds and resources to offer the gift of professional dance to audiences. Paying performers is largely a dream here as well as there. I hope to be able to follow up on this courageous dancer's life and career. Thanks to the WIP for linking this story.
