Invasion of the Sea-Smurfs

by Amy Goodman, Truthdig, USA - A little-noticed story surfaced a couple of weeks ago in the Army Times newspaper about the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team. “Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months,” reported Army Times staff writer Gina Cavallaro, “the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.” Disturbingly, she writes that “they may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control” as well.

This is truly frightening. What will it take for Americans to wake up, take their collective heads out of the sand, and oppose everything set in place by the Bush administration. I never thought that our biggest national disaster would be our own government.

A horrific window on the future. How ironic that the Republican Party of "small government" not only dragged us into the disastrous war in Iraq and oversaw the Enron scandals and the collapse of Wall Street, but now sees fit to put the pieces in place for martial law.

Americans love to chant that we are "the land of the free", but never seem to wonder who it is that we are free from. It was supposed to have been our own government.
