My Unlikely Life Mission: Self-defense as Physical Literacy
Ellen, Thanks for sharing this article. It is wonderful to learn about this side of your work. I took a self defense course in the mid-70s that really changed my life in many ways, so I can speak from experience. Although I have not yet encountered the kind of violence you describe, learning karate helped me face fearful situations with some degree of confidence. It helps to realize that one doesn't need to simply give in to the violence. When faced with a dangerous situation, presenting ones self with confidence might in and of itself help prevent some violent acts.
The long term benefit for me is that learning karate has also helped me face some less dangerous challenges in my life, even long after I am not actively involved with it. When you approach life as a powerless being, if affects every aspect of your life. Mentally, I can take the karate stance!
Some women (many women) in developing countries face extremely repressive cultural marriage customs and discrimination with regard to educational rights, etc. so I'm particularly happy to learn that you are attempting to bring these issues to the international level. Education is key to helping young women realize their potential, both intellectually and with regard to their physical well being.
I look forward to hearing more about your work.
